This article is devoted to the consideration of the pragmatic potential of evidential markers. Each context has a certain threshold of truthfulness. The threshold is the lower boundary for a communicatively successful statement, that is, a sincere expression of a declarative sentence. A weak proof may mean that the speaker expresses himself/herself with regard to information having a significantly lower threshold of truthfulness. D. Lewis expresses the fundamental statement that the pragmatic function of evidential markers is to change the contextual threshold of truthfulness. The old threshold of truthfulness is replaced by a potentially new one, obtained from general knowledge and oriented to the presence of reliability indicators. Under normal circumstances, the pragmatic evidential strategy of the speaker is to move the threshold of truthfulness to the point at which the statement will correspond to it. The statement is pragmatically evaluated in this new context. On the one hand, the speaker specifies a certain source of information to remove full responsibility for its reliability, on the other hand, the threshold for the reliability of information is enhanced by citing similar information.
Keywords: evidential strategy, evidential marker, epistemic modality, pragmatic potential.
